What is The Magic Hour of Life?
The Magic Hour of Life© promotes three key practices during the first 60 minutes after childbirth: skin-to-skin contact between the mother and baby, the delay of the umbilical cord clamping, and the immediate onset of breastfeeding by the mother.
These practices are critical in ensuring the mother's health and the newborn's survival. The magic hour of life ensures all babies' proper biological, emotional and cognitive development.

THREE PRINCIPLES

Immediate Breastfeeding
The most effective and cost-efficient intervention to avert infant mortality, preventing 13% of the causes of death in children under five.

Skin To Skin Contact
Enhances social and emotional development and attachment. It promotes neurophysiological adjustment to postnatal life.
The baby cries less, and mothers experience fewer maternal depression symptoms. The baby feels less pain responding to clinical procedures.
There is a high impact on promoting breastfeeding and healthy eating behaviours.

Delayed Umbilical Cord Clamping
This benefits nutrition by increasing the amount of iron passed on to the baby. It applies to all children, especially those born in low and medium income countries with higher rates of iron deficiency anemia.
